Vapocoolant Spray vs Lidocaine/Prilocaine Cream for Reducing the Pain of Venipuncture in Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Crossover Study
OBJECTIVE Patients undergoing hemodialysis are repeatedly exposed to stress and pain from approximately 300 punctures per year to their arteriovenous fistula. This study was designed to measure pain associated with venepuncture during AVF cannulation and to compare the effectiveness of ethyl chloride vapocoolant spray, topical eutectic mixture of local anesthetics (EMLA) cream and placebo in co...
متن کاملContamination of Blood Cultures 1055
Contamination of blood cultures is believed to occur mainly during the venepuncture procedure. Consequently, meticulous preparation of the venepuncture site is widely recommended. To determine whether the contamination rate is indeed affected by the quality of the antiseptic procedure at the venepuncture site, 181 paired cultures were collected from 176 patients during a 6-month period after ei...
متن کاملA structured learning programme for venepuncture and cannulation.
This article discusses a structured learning programme that offers a standardised assessment for all healthcare staff to learn venepuncture and/or cannulation. Nurses from four NHS trusts in London and the south east, with a special interest and expertise in cannulation and venepuncture, devised the programme to reduce the need for repeated training and assessment when staff take up new posts w...
متن کاملA cost-benefit analysis of training nurses for extended roles.
This study uses a questionnaire to assess the costs and benefits of a course to teach the extended roles of cannulation, venepuncture and intravenous drug administration. The course had a positive influence on nurses' uptake of venepuncture and IV drug administration, but not cannulation. The cost of 916 pounds to successfully train a single nurse in all three practices leads to the suggestion ...
متن کاملUltrasound-guided infraclavicular axillary vein cannulation for central venous access.

Ultrasound guided axillary vein puncture has not been well described. We assessed ultrasound imaging to guide catheterization of the infraclavicular axillary vein. METHODS In 200 consecutive patients we attempted to catheterize the axillar...
